Switching Gears - Knitter and Hubby go on Medical Mission

Preparations Begin!

Where to begin with our Mercy Ships adventure story?  I’ve had Mercy Ships in my head for over 20 years.  It started with a mint commercial on a Christian Radio station in Washington D.C. and it wormed its way into my brain ever since.  I’ve long felt that God gave us so many opportunities for education and training as well as the financial means to not have to bring in a lot of money in order that we could be of service.  But as a pathologist I always wondered, “where on earth could I be of service since I wasn’t a primary care doc?”  But Mercy Ships stayed in my brain.

In September Peter and I went to Lindale, Tx to attend the three day introduction course about this terrific ministry.  He finally got to hear the real scoop about what I’ve blathered on about for years and I pulled out my knitting needles as this was my third trip to the Texas outback.  Three days later they still had no idea how to use a cardiologist and a blood banker.  Devine inspiration takes its own time it seems.

The following week Peter came back from a two day interview in Seattle shaking his head saying, “Well, I’m not excited about those prospects”.  After years of waiting for some direction it seemed that Peter was going to get some of the same instruction to WAIT on the Lord.   Surprisingly, two days later we got a call from Mercy Ships asking if we would be willing to work on the ward and as a screener.  Uhhh, YES!  This is way better than the cooking or Starbuck’s crew I’d volunteered for!

So – a barrage of paperwork –(thanks to those of you that filled out references for us), shots and prescriptions later and we’re starting to get things ready to leave in January!

If you’re interested in learning more about our travels I believe you can subscribe to this blog and get e-mail notification of new entries.  There’s a ton of information about the ship and the mission at www.mercyships.org   This is my second attempt at blogging.  Surprise!  Yeah – the first one was lack luster as it was about my knitting.  Seems I’d rather knit than write.  If you have questions, comments or enjoy anything I post please leave a comment.  If I’ve annoyed you kindly send a private message and I’ll try and work something out to be less annoying in my attempts at humor.

Pending approval by my compadre on this adventure I’ll go ahead and post this as my premiere attempt to inform you of our impending adventure in Africa.  We appreciate all of you that will lift us up in prayer to not only be useful but to be servants to God’s people but also to each other.

12/11/11

Well time is flying by!  I have completed all my immunizations and my arms feel less like the pin cushions they were becoming last month!  We have lists and lists of stuff that we need to buy and stuff we need to do.  The great news is that the numbers of things on those lists being checked off has grown on a daily basis.  We’re getting very excited as this grows closer and closer.  We’ve even met with a few people to enlist folks to pray for us while we’re on the other side of the world facing challenges that at this point only God knows the details of.  So – I’m putting the final touches on this – our first blog post just prior to heading off to our churches Mission’s board meeting to present our request for prayer for the next six months of being servant evangelists for Jesus.  Unfortunately poor Peter has a nasty cold so I think our socializing will be kept to a minimum to avoid infecting others.  Stay tuned for future installments of Ann and Peter’s amazing adventure.
